Anti-Apartheid history
From 1977 until IU Board of Trustees adopted the resolution to divest from certain direct and indirect investments in South Africa during Apartheid in 1990, the Student Coalition Against Racism, Bloomington South Africa Committee, and Black Christian Student Fellowship organized for the university to drop it’s (at one point) $5.5 million in investments in companies supporting Apartheid. These groups pursued coalitions and a number of tactics that likely had a role in IU’s move to slowly decrease investments in and ultimately decide to divest from such companies.
- IUSA: One forum for anti-Apartheid organizing at IU was the IU student association (IUSA, now IUSG).
- Petitions: Anti-Apartheid organizers also used petitions to demonstrate popular support for these efforts. One such petition garnered over 8,000 signatures.
- Divestment conference: A conference hosted on campus that pulled faculty, students, staff, and community members to learn about and discuss divestment from Israel.
